About Song of the Mountains
Thirteen years and counting — the concert series preserving Appalachia's musical heritage, one live taping at a time.
Song of the Mountains® is an award-winning public television concert series that showcases the best talents in Bluegrass, Americana, and Old-time music.
Founded in 2003 as a monthly stage concert at the historic Lincoln Theatre in Marion, Virginia, the series has grown into a national showcase for the music, musicians, and culture of the Southern Appalachians.
Each concert is filmed live in front of an audience and edited into an episode for the award-winning television series, which airs on public television affiliates across the country and streams on PBS.org and the PBS app. The Virginia General Assembly designated Song of the Mountains as the Commonwealth's official state television series, recognizing its role in promoting and preserving the musical heritage and culture of Virginia.
Song of the Mountains has hosted some of the most celebrated names in Bluegrass and Americana, including Dr. Ralph Stanley, Doc Watson, Bill Monroe, and Tom T. Hall, alongside today's rising stars, all on the same historic stage.
Our Mission
The mission of Song of the Mountains is to promote, share and archive the indigenous music of Appalachian Mountains and this music’s related and derivative forms; to produce, present, record, broadcast, and televise concerts, musical events and programs featuring the music of such style.
